Departmental Programmes Structure

Vision

To be among the nation’s leading research and teaching Computer Science and Information Technology departments

Department Mission

To create, share, and apply knowledge in Computer Science and Information Technology, to educate students to be successful, ethical, and effective problem-solvers and life-long learners who will contribute positively to the economic well-being of our region and nation and who are prepared to tackle complex 21st Century challenges facing the world.

Department Goals

To realize our vision, we must achieve the following goals:

  1. To provide high quality certificate, diploma and undergraduate education in computer science and information technology by enhancing teaching effectiveness, refining curriculum to keep the program current with the rapidly changing computer technology and providing equipment/facilities for students to access and gain practical experience.
  2. To provide effective academic advising to promote student learning and development outcomes and achievement of educational goals.
  3. To teach students how to acquire new knowledge, independently, in a world that changes with ever increasing rapidity
  1. To provide up-to-date curricula in the technical and scientific knowledge needed for the professional and academic goals of our students;
  2. To increase and embrace diversity in our student and faculty bodies, including increasing the proportion of females;
  3. Pursue excellence in scholarship and seek support for our research through research grants and contracts;
  4. To achieve a high level of faculty and student innovation and entrepreneurship via curriculum and other resources;
  5. To establish strong and positive visibility for our educational and research activities both within and outside of KIUT, establish partnerships with local businesses and industry, work to promote pre-university Computer Science education and awareness in and around the area of Gongo la Mboto.

Objective of Computer Science Programmes

Our goal is to offer a high-quality certificate, diploma and degree program that ensures that students will be able to integrate theory and practice, recognize the importance of abstraction and appreciate the value of efficient design created to meet clearly developed requirements. The programs are intended to prepare students for lifelong learning as they undertake professional careers in computing and information technology.

They will have sufficient understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of Computer Science such that learning a new programming language, operating system, or information system will be viewed as a regular activity. Additionally, students will graduate with the ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing. Ultimately, students will graduate with an understanding of the context of their skills within a broader academic and applied environment.

In particular, the core objectives are to make sure that students graduate with:

  1. Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts both written and orally.
  2. Strong problem-solving skills.
  3. Considerable knowledge of a broad class of problem-solving techniques (e.g.; this includes Algorithms, heuristics, and design techniques).
  4. Extensive understanding of the fundamentals of Computer Science.

Expected Outcomes of the Computer Science Programmes

It is expected that the students graduating from the Computer Science Programs to have the ability to:

  1. Apply knowledge of computing and information technology appropriate to the discipline.
  2. Analyze a problem and identify and define the computing requirements appropriate to its solution.
  3. Design, implement and evaluate a computer-based system, process, component, or program to meet desired needs.
  4. Have an understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security, and social issues and responsibilities.
  5. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  6. Analyze the local and global impact of computing on individuals, organizations and society.
  7. Recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, continuing professional development.
  8. Use current techniques, skills, and tools necessary for computing practices.
  9. Design and development principles in the construction of software systems of varying complexity.

Departmental &Cross -Departmental Plans

  1. Increase programs – the department is the process of identifying relevant and cutting-edge programs that can be offered i.e. Data Science
  2. Short courses – in collaboration with the ICT and Marketing department to provide short courses to students inside KIUT as well as those surrounding KIUT. The aim to is to offer specialized courses targeting various sectors / industries in our immediate community i.e. Tanzania Aviation with courses such as cyber security or Julius Nyerere Airport.
  3. KIUT IT Hub and Incubation – in close collaboration with the ICT Department to provide a living space for students to undertake their IT projects, to train and receive mentor-ship on their projects.
  4. Faculty research – in accordance to the national research agenda
  5. Exchange Programmes – the department is also looking to form partnerships with other universities as part of sandwich or summer programs.
