Library Opening Hours

The library of Kampala International University in Tanzania offers  user-centered information services and resources. The library strives to facilitate an effective teaching and learning environment, research and knowledge exchange at the University through the provision of quality, flexible, and varied services to its users. The library is gifted with highly qualified academic and professional personnel who work hard to satisfy users’ needs.  This is attained by being a sympathetic,  innovative and efficient management that is focused on continuing to effect the improvement of the library resources as well as facilities.

Sections of the Library

The KIUT Library has the following sections, namely:

  1. Reference and Circulation Desk; where all information related queries are solved. This is users’ starting point when in of any information resource service in the library.
  2. Open Shelves; where most books are kept, access to the books not require use of a library card.
  3. Reserved Books Section; where books on high demand, rare and in few copies than needed are kept, access to these resources requires a library card.
  4. Law Books Section; where all books to do with law are kept, access to these resources requires a library card.
  5. Medical/Health Sciences Section; where all books in those respective fields are kept, access to these resources requires a library card.
  6. Electronic Resources (E-resource) Section; where all non-physical reading materials of the library are accessed from, access to these resources does not require a library card. E-resource is any information source that the library provides access to in an electronic format. E-books and journals are available in online catalogue and can only be accessed through the IP address of the University (network). Examples of e-resources are electronic journals (e-journal), electronic books (e-book) online databases in varied digital formats, Adobe Acrobat documents (pdf), WebPages (.htm, .html, .asp etc) and moreThe library has purchased subscriptions to many electronic information resources in order to provide users with access to them free of charge.
  7. Technical/Processing Section; where all non-physical materials acquired by the library are processed from. It is out of bounds to library non-staff and students.

 

KOHA Software

Kampala international University in Tanzania Library use Koha software to facilitate the management of the library resources and enable its users to access library resources easily. KOHA is an open source integrated library system (ILS) used World-Wide by public, schools and special libraries. Koha is the first free software library automation package in use World-wide; its development is steered by growing community of users collaborating to achieve their technology goals. Koha is featured set continues to evolve and expand to meet the users’ needs.

This software assists the users (students/staffs) to search materials (books, articles, journals) in the library as well as online sources. Users can conduct a simple search or an advanced search. Users can search online sources or physical sources by titles, author, organization, text search, and subject or even by year of publication. Search results for physical materials gives information on the title of the book, author, publication statement and the section of the library or where the item is located.

Apart from searching online sources and physical sources in the library, Koha helps to show the statistics of library users and the list of books in hold and those borrowed by library users. The software also assists the librarians in charging and discharging of library materials to customers.

Library Membership

  1. Membership of KIUT Library System is open to all staffs and students of the University as defined in the University statutes and to such other persons as determined by the senate in consultation with the University Council.
  2. Admission to any of KIUT Library is not granted to users who do not have a current library card. The library card is not transferable.
  3. The library Card must be shown on demand to the librarian on request. All library users are always required to have their library card handy when using the library services.
