Kampala International University in Tanzania organized and conducted a two-day training workshop on Information Communication Technology (ICT) to students. Funded by Help to Help, an international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), students were trained in computer fundamentals on the first day and computer applications – spreadsheets through Microsoft Excel on the second day. The workshop focused on the first-year students with very little knowledge of ICT.
Help to Help is a not for profit Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) from Sweden, established in 2014 that provides scholarships to students around East Africa through a crowd funding system. Beneficiaries are poor students that cannot afford tuition fees. It funds students in the area of Medicine & Health (50%), Engineering & Natural Sciences (20%), Social Sciences and Business (15%) and Education (15%).
Through online applications, 196 students applied and only 100 were selected. Out of those selected, 96 students managed to attend the training workshop.
The training took place on the 25th and 26th of January 2020. It was a very intense but highly valuable learning activity. Most of the trainees enjoyed day two training that ran through computer spreadsheets that was considered particularly vital for immediate applications. The very few that had some background knowledge in ICT applications were equally amazed by the complexities and scope of the program, excel with mathematical features that have many uses in almost every field.
Mr. Mshana, one of the organizers from KIUT, said he was happy with the huge student turn up. Asked if another similar workshop was on the cards, he responded in the affirmative, adding that there will be numerous similar courses in the near future. Finally, he thanked the Help to Help organization for their financial and material support in making the workshop a success.
