This is a ten-semester (five years) competency based programme, leading to the degree followed by a year’s internship at an approved hospital. The first four semesters are largely devoted to basic sciences and introduction to clinical medicine, but also fieldwork and community training. The next six semesters are largely practical and consist of junior and senior clerkships as well as community health training.
The duration of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree programme shall extend over a period of not less than five (5) years, unless the School of Health Sciences Board recommends and the KIU Senate approves. Each academic year shall be divided into two (2) semesters, the duration of the programme shall be equivalent to ten (10) semesters of biomedical, pathologies and clinical courses and the maximum number of academic years a candidate may be allowed to stay in the programme is eight (8) years excluding any approved timeout (Dead term/year).

The curriculum consists of courses organized at four (4) different and spiraling levels numbered I-IV. Generally, the courses at an earlier level are pre-requisite for the understanding of courses at the next (higher) level.
Level I Courses: These consist of biomedical sciences and university common courses addressing normal body tissues and systems. They include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Basic Microbiology and Parasitology, Basic Pharmacology, and Behavioral sciences among others.
Level II Courses: These include the pathologies and applied aspects of the various biomedical sciences.
Level III Courses: These include Clinical courses consisting of rotations in the various Clinical disciplines.
