The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) directorate was established in October, 2010, when KIUT (then KIU-DCC) moved its operations to Gongo la Mboto area in Dar es Salaam. The aim of starting the ICT directorate was to assist the university to realize  optimal use of ICT services and resources for research, learning and administration purposes.
The University tasked the ICT directorate to carry out the following: –
ICT support within the university evolved from the need to ensure all staff and students are utilizing university ICT resources in fulfilling their daily activities without the hassle of something not working well. ICT support is handled by the ICT support team that acts as ‘safe guard’ to users in the ICT resources pool. Through use of a ticketing system, all reported issues are well handled and resolved timely. The ICT support team features very competent technical personnel who are trained in troubleshooting errors to ensure a smooth flow of user activities.
The ICT directorate conducts training on new systems to students and staff, the training of deployed systems to new staff and the training of new students for example, in the e-learning system, the Online Student Information Manager (OSIM) system. We often conduct in house training and at a few times we conduct outdoor training depending on the scope of knowledge to be shared in a particular training session.
The KIUT local area network (LAN) is connected using cables to hosts that are near to one another and wireless connection for distant hosts. A dedicated team of network administrators are working round the clock to make sure there is a stable low latency internet connection and to ensure the security of data and LAN resources are not breached at all times.
The ICT directorate is involved in developing websites for the university by bridging the technical gap in the website development projects. Our website developers also build applications for smartphones and computers.
One of the key activities fulfilled by the ICT directorate is managing systems that collect data, process and disseminate information/ reports to different levels of the university. One such system is the Online Student Information Manager (OSIM).
The ICT directorate has four state of the art computer labs for student learning and research purposes; our labs range in capacity with the biggest lab accommodating a hundred users and the smallest accommodating thirty two. The lab environment is very conducive to learning and each lab has at least one technician to help students and staff when there is a technical challenge.
