General Information
Medical laboratory department aims to produce human resources that will work in various laboratories for health care services delivery and national development. The department offers bachelor’s in medical laboratory sciences course which runs in a four-year duration.
Basing on the ongoing globalization, increased competitiveness and industrialization demands, it is important for the University to produce qualified and competent professionals in such cadre to spearhead productivity in the Health and Industrial sectors.
Philosophy
The Medical Laboratory Sciences department hosts the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences programme that is geared towards producing competent, innovative, creative, and flexible laboratory personnel who will cope with the dynamic changes of the profession, technology, and socio-economic needs.
Medical Laboratory Sciences is an art and science of disease investigation and diagnosis, therefore:
- The accessibility to the highest attainable standards of health laboratory services is a fundamental right of the human being irrespective of gender, age, race, religion, socio-cultural differences, political affiliation, economic or social background.
- The practice of medical laboratory is humanitarian and requires knowledge, skills, and attitudes in respect of compassion, respect and empathy, ethical and legal consideration in the provision of care.
- Environment influences individuals, families, and community at large. Therefore, laboratory personnel must acknowledge the different interaction patterns in the environment and the impact in interaction to health and illness.
- Education is a continuous process that embraces new technology and community demands and therefore laboratory personnel shall keep abreast with current health development to render quality cost-effective services.
- The learner has the responsibility for her/his learning and self-development through active participation in the learning process; and
- The maintaining of teamwork spirit at all levels of training.
It is, therefore, expected that the graduates will aspire to pursue higher qualifications in Medical Laboratory Sciences profession. The programme operates under a semester wise system. This will facilitate a large degree of flexibility for the recognition of learning experiences and professional practice for the graduates’ future development.

To have competent laboratory personnel who will provide laboratory services effectively at different health care settings and cope with existing and emerging health issues.
Mission
To establish conducive and sustainable training environment that will allow students and graduates to perform competently at their relevant levels and aspire for the attainment of higher knowledge, skills, and attitudes in promoting health, preventing diseases, and caring for clients in all settings
Aim of the Programme
The programme aims to achieve the following goals:
- To form a flexible course that is responsive to the dynamic world of work and society.
- To provide medical laboratory skills, knowledge and behaviours that are vital to learners, employers, and the community.
- To entice self-realization and teamwork spirit that will enable graduates to perform efficiently and aspire for higher-level training.
- To build capacity to participate in the implementation of National Health Policy and its accompanying Operational Guidelines; and
- To promote moral, legal, and ethical conduct among laboratory personnel and other health workers within the laboratory sciences profession and national legal framework.
Purpose of the BMLS Programme
This training is meant to provide Medical Laboratory Sciences knowledge, skills, and appropriate attitudes to the learners. All taught courses are intended to build leaner’s knowledge and skills necessary for acquiring competences for the practice of Medical Laboratory Sciences.
Objectives
General Objective
To form a career advancement and a primary role for medical laboratory management in health care service delivery.
Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of this programme are to:
- Impact graduates with managerial and leadership knowledge and competencies that will enable them to manage their environment in the provision of the Medical Laboratory Services.
- Impart appropriate knowledge, skills, and attitudes relevant to medical laboratory sciences practice about preventive and curative health care services in the community.
- Produce a Medical Laboratory professional capable of carrying out scientific research as well as teaching the lower cadre.
- Steer creativity and innovativeness in response to challenges inherent in medical laboratory sciences practice and health care delivery.
- Inculcate a culture of teamwork and build critical thinking and problem-solving skills in medical laboratory sciences and health care practice.
- Promote a good sense of citizenship, accountability, and responsibility to graduates.
- Provide an international outlook of the graduates and widen learners’ advantages into regional and international labour markets.
- Produce graduates majoring in:
- Haematology and Blood transfusion
- Histopathology and Cytopathology
- Medical microbiology
- Chemical pathology
Career Guidance
At the University teaching staff and students embrace a good relationship. Generally, the staff provides emotional and academic support to the students. And from time-to-time staff give some information about career development and opportunities available countrywide and globally.
Laboratory Practical Training
During training, students are imparted with knowledge and skills related to medical laboratory sciences in the University teaching laboratories. To ensure their competences they are later sent to different clinical laboratories in a different Government hospital for a prescribed period. During the tertiary training period, students are attached to the different regional and referral laboratories around the country where at the end they produce a detailed report on the training obtained
