There are three modern laboratories installed with standard equipment for practical training on campus.
Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy Laboratory
Equipment in this laboratory includes Fume Hood, Soxhlet Apparatus, Rotary Evaporator, pH meter and desiccator.
In this laboratory students learn practical skills of drug extraction from natural sources, drug synthesis from organic and inorganic starting materials, compound isolation, separation, purification, identification, structure elucidation and substituent modification to improve therapeutic efficacy as well as to reduce toxicity and side effects.
Pharmaceutical Technology Laboratory
Equipment in this laboratory includes machines for raw material mixing, tableting, capsule filling, tablet coating, aluminum blister packing, dissolution testing and tablet hardness testing.
In this laboratory students acquire skills in formulation of active pharmaceutical ingredients into finished dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, ointments, syrups, solutions, powders, creams and suppositories.
They also learn to undertake dosage form quality control measures.
The department has several sections that will ultimately grow into fully fledged departments in their own right when staffing improves. These include, Pharmaceutical Chemistry ( encompassing medicinal chemistry and analytical chemistry), Pharmaceutics (encompassing pharmaceutical technology and pharmacy practice), Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Microbiology.
