As the 2025 Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball League (BDL) draws near, KIUT’s head coach Denis Funganoti says the team is working tirelessly to prepare for their opening match against the formidable Stein Warriors.
The game is set for Sunday, May 11, in Dar es Salaam, a day after the league officially kicks off on May 10.
Speaking to The Respondent Online on Wednesday, Funganoti emphasized the importance of the opening match and acknowledged the strength of their opponents.
“We know the Stein Warriors are a strong side. They’ve made significant signings this season, bringing in experienced and skilled players who have already proven themselves in previous competitions,” Funganoti said. “It won’t be an easy game, but we are not intimidated.”
While Stein Warriors have gone for high-profile recruits, KIUT has taken a different route by focusing on developing homegrown talent.
“Our recruitment has mainly been local. We’ve signed promising players from within the country who are hungry to prove themselves on the big stage,” he said. “It’s a different approach, but one we believe in.”
Funganoti stressed that his team has been putting in the work both physically and tactically.
“Preparations are going well. The team is coming together, and the players are training with purpose,” he said. “The spirit in camp is high, and everyone is focused on starting the season strongly.”
Despite the underdog label some might assign KIUT, Funganoti believes his players are ready to surprise many.
“Our goal is to compete with intensity and intelligence. We may not have the big names, but we have unity, discipline, and ambition,” he stated.
The coach also highlighted the importance of the opening match in setting the tone for the rest of the season.
“A win on Sunday would give us great momentum. But even more important is seeing the kind of fight and teamwork we’ve been working on in training,” he added.
As the countdown to tip off continues, fans and analysts alike are eager to see whether KIUT’s tactical discipline can stand up against Stein Warriors’ star power.
The Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball League promises high stakes action, and for KIUT, the mission begins with a test of grit and determination.
