Dar es Salaam, March 29 – The Rotaract Club of Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT), in partnership with the Vertex Group of Experts, successfully conducted the second dose phase of the Hepatitis B vaccination program at the university dispensary.

The event, spearheaded by the KIUT Rotaract Club Chairperson and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery student, Ms. Mercy Walter, saw over 130 individuals receive their crucial second dose, having initially begun the vaccination process on February 27. Ms. Walter emphasized the necessity of completing the full vaccination schedule, noting that a final dose will be administered in six months, with the exact date to be announced later.

Highlighting the dangers of Hepatitis B, Ms. Walter explained that the disease is primarily transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, or other bodily fluids, including through sexual contact, sharing of needles, and from mother to child during birth. The infection can lead to chronic liver disease, liver failure, or even cancer, often progressing silently until severe complications arise.

“Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent Hepatitis B. By protecting ourselves, we also safeguard our communities,” she stated.

Health initiatives remain a key focus for the KIUT Rotaract Club, and Ms. Walter reassured students and staff of the club’s continued efforts to organize more affordable and accessible health programs through collaborations with professional partners and sponsors.

She expressed her gratitude to KIUT for supporting health initiatives and acknowledged the Vertex Group of Experts for their professional assistance in making the vaccination program a success. Concluding her remarks, Ms. Walter affirmed, “Together, we can build a healthier, stronger community.”

The final dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine will be administered in the coming months, and the club urges all participants to complete their full vaccination for optimal protection.
