Professor Olaitan R. Asuquo, a senior lecturer in the anatomy department gave the sentiments during KIUT Chapel’s first year week event, held at the University Main Hall on 19th January 2023. The event was themed, “Pathway to Academic Excellence,” which was meant to help students excel in their academic endeavors in school and beyond through dependence and trust on God.
“A person can go to town by car, bus, bicycle, taxi, or foot with each option preferable depending on multiple factors, meaning each option has its impacts that can help you reach your destination on time, late, or never reach at all,” stated Prof. Asuquo.
She gave the example to teach students that there are multiple paths towards success, but not all will get you there, especially if you take it alone without God, citing biblical verses from the book of James, Romans, and Proverbs and her personal history when in university.
Furthermore, Prof. Asuquo taught students with emphasis that the road to academic excellence starts during their stay at the University by getting good grades, urging them to practice self-discipline and proper time management.
“Self-discipline and good time management will help you excel academically because it makes you attend lectures on time, stay focused, work diligently, and more importantly not get tempted to cheat,” said Prof. Asuquo.
“Cheating in exams does not please God and has grave and shameful consequences down the road,” added Prof. Asuquo.
The event also had members, students and staff engage in prayers and songs of praise and worship.
Students gave positive sentiments to the teachings, especially the first-year students who are still adjusting to tertiary education life. With continuing students, it served as a reminder to keep them on the righteous path toward academic excellence through biblical ways.
Staff members also benefited from the teachings, with one member stating that self-discipline and time management is also valuable in the workplace and career advancement in general.
