About Programme

This is a ten-semester (five years) competency based programme, leading to the degree followed by a year’s internship at an approved hospital. The first four semesters are largely devoted to basic sciences and introduction to clinical medicine, but also fieldwork and community training. The next six semesters are largely practical and consist of junior and senior clerkships as well as community health training.

The duration of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree programme shall extend over a period of not less than five (5) years, unless the School of Health Sciences Board recommends and the KIU Senate approves. Each academic year shall be divided into two (2) semesters, the duration of the programme shall be equivalent to ten (10) semesters of biomedical, pathologies and clinical courses and the maximum number of academic years a candidate may be allowed to stay in the programme is eight (8) years excluding any approved timeout (Dead term/year).

Admission Criteria

Direct Entry – for form Six Applicants

  • Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with minimum of 6 points: A minimum of D grade in Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Holders of Ordinary Diploma or Equivalent Qualifications

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine with an average of “B’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition, an applicant must have a minimum of “D” grade in any five (5) non religious subjects at O-Level.

Programme Structure

The curriculum consists of courses organized at four (4) different and spiraling levels numbered I-IV. Generally, the courses at an earlier level are pre-requisite for the understanding of courses at the next (higher) level.

Level I Courses: These consist of biomedical sciences and university common courses addressing normal body tissues and systems. They include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Basic Microbiology and Parasitology, Basic Pharmacology, and Behavioral sciences among others.

Level II Courses: These include the pathologies and applied aspects of the various biomedical sciences.

Level III Courses: These include Clinical courses consisting of rotations in the various Clinical disciplines.

 

Learning Outcome

At the successful completion of the program, the graduate shall be able to do the following, with respect to:

Provision of health services to individuals, families and communities:

  1. Apply the knowledge of the principles of basic and biomedical sciences and pathology in provision of health services.
  2. Apply the basic principles of clinical management in provision of health services.
  3. Contribute effectively to early intervention, disease prevention and health promotion.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions used.
  5. Communicate effectively
  6. Effectively utilize Information Communication Technology (ICT) in health services delivery.
  7. Work effectively as a member of a health services delivery team as a leader and being led.
  8. Adapt to and participate in positive change.
  9. Provide health services in ethical manner, showing appropriate attitude, professionalism and integrity.
  10. Act as an effective expert witness in medico – legal issues.
  11. Apply the process of critical thinking in health care.
  12. Apply evidence-based knowledge in dealing with health issues.

Management of Health Services:

  1. Administer and manage health services effectively, including assets, finances, and personnel.
  2. Manage health information systems.

Generation of Information:

  1. Collate information arising out of health services provision and share it with other health service providers.
  2.  Conduct research in health related priority areas and disseminate the information arising there from.

Dissemination of Information:

  1. Provide effective teaching in health related institutional programmes.
  2. Provide effective health education.
  3. Pass on knowledge, skills and appropriate attitudes to other health workers in the team.
  4. Function as an effective member of information sharing systems.

Community Leadership:

  1. Participate in community development activities as a resourceful and respectable member.
  2. Take up positions of leadership within the community.
