Social Work and Social Administration is a discipline that gives graduates a very broad understanding about the social world and what it entails. Social work and Social Administration are two terms that differ in scope, but both have the same outcome, helping people in the society. Combing the two equips students with micro and macro scopes of the discipline making you among the best experts in the labour market to bring positive changes to society, both in Tanzania and beyond borders. To explain the two, as previously stated, social work is a micro-view and social administration is a macro-view of the social world.
Social Work
As the Global pace increases due to technological advances and globalization, it is inevitable that the problems we face as individuals and as a society will continue to evolve and become more complex. Due to this, dedicated, passionate and career-oriented social workers are and will be needed to help societies with these problems. Graduates studying the field in this micro-level provide clinical and case management services directly to individuals, couples, families, and groups. Social workers serve clients dealing with a range of challenges including poverty, physical and mental health issues, addiction, and family problems. They may provide clinical services, such as therapy or counselling, and connect people to resources in the community to help them overcome challenges.
Social Administration
Social Administration on the other hand is the macro level of the social work, which is a different side of social work, but one that is every bit as critical as providing direct services. Social Administration is focused on the future. Administrators are decision makers, concerned about the well-being of a total system versus one client. This work requires knowledge about social policy and the delivery of social services. Administrators must understand human behaviour, a commitment to social work ethics and values, and a vision for the future, making it a rewarding discipline, allowing graduates to make a difference in the societies they live in and serve.
Similar to the effects of the Global pace, today’s agencies and human services organizations are more complex to run than a traditional business. Having a strong knowledge in social administration to steer the direction of an organization is crucial. This means working on budgets, designing programs to fulfil the needs of the population, evaluating the effectiveness of existing programs, identifying areas that lack support, managing overarching strategy for the community or department, and working on policies.
Furthermore, Social Administration involves knowing social services, human behaviour and social problems as social work as a profession is still rooted in its commitment to being consumer-oriented and servicing disenfranchised populations. A sophisticated understanding of business and a feel of being a leader for additional attributes of value to a student pursing social administration.
