History of KIUT Chapel

The KIUT Chapel was originally started in 2011, in response to a directive from Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) that there must be a religious institution within the University, as a requirement for being awarded a charter.

It was initially an interdenominational gathering that brought together all the Christian religions present at the time, i.e., Protestants, Catholics, Seventh Day Adventists, and Pentecostals. It had its Pastor, Mrs. Owolabi, other leaders included Ms. Karen, Mr. Ali, Ms. Lulu, and Mr. Sizya, who were all staff members then, most of whom have since left the Institution. The intention of the Chapel was to be in service to both the students and staff as well as to the surrounding community.

Due to the growth of the institution, the amalgamation could not stand for long, leading to establishment of other Christian’s congregations, and leaving KIUT Chapel as a place of worship mostly for the Pentecostals and others who wanted to be part of it. Mrs. Owolabi remained on as the Pastor and passed on the torch to Mr. Ogah, who was the Director of Quality Assurance at the time. Mr. Ogah was assisted by Mr. Joshua who was working in the University Library, and Ms. Judith Atukwatse, who was then the Head of Department (HoD) of Social Sciences. The Chapel had few students attending the services at that point in time. The members of the Chapel mainly comprised of KIUT staff members.

The leadership of the church has been evolving. It has been greatly affected by the movement of staff, with the greatest effect seen in 2018 when a lot of staff members left KIUT. As mentioned earlier, the first Pastor was Mrs. Owolabi, who then left it in the hands of Mr. Ogah. Mr. Ogah Pastored the Chapel for about five years and in 2018 left for Ms. Judith Atukwatse to take it up for a short while. Since July 2018, the Chapel is being led by Dr Nabitula, the Associate Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Science, assisted by Pastor Stanley Makomola.

In principle, the KIUT Chapel is still an interdenominational church that brings together all those who believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. It does not matter which denomination one is affiliated to, as long as they believe in Jesus Christ, they are welcome to be part of the church.

KIUT serves both the student and staff communities as well as the community around the University. Our programmes are as follows;

Vision

For all the Saints that come through our doors to be fully equipped for the works of service for which they have been called.

Mission

To provide a training ground for the equipping of the saints for the works of service for which they have been called

Objectives

  1. To teach/learn how to;
    • Walk in fear of God
    • Hear the voice of God
    • Walk in obedience to the voice/word of God
    • Walk in love
    • Walk in faith
  2. The Holy Bible is the foundation of our Faith.
  3. By this Vision, Mission and Objectives, we focus our teaching and activities to ensure that we achieve our objectives and that everyone gets training in the area where their gift is.
  4. The community that we serve, both students and staff do not know much about what KIUT Chapel is all about and have therefore not embraced or desired to associate with it. We decided to write this newsletter as a way of reporting to you what we are doing as well as let you know who we are.
  5. Our plan is to produce a newsletter twice every academic year that is at the end of every semester, with the hope that KIUT Chapel as one of the religious pillars of this community will be embrace by the whole community of KIUT, as well as the community around us. In the proceeding pages we shall tell you about the various departments we have and the kind of activities that we do so that you can see and know the great work that God is doing in our midst.

Chapel Department

The Prayer and Evangelism department organises all the prayer meetings and sessions together with evangelism programs of the church. The team always meet on Wednesdays at 1230hrs and Sundays at 0930hrs for prayers. They also fast and pray on the first week of every new month.

The Finance department collects and keeps the offerings and all other financial gains of the church. They also record all the expenditures and incomes of the church, which includes distributing finances to the departments as required.

It’s a fellowship of all youth in the church, a place where youth meet and discuss different agendas about the Kingdom of God. Youths meet every Thursday from 1730 hrs to 1730 hrs at the chapel office. They have activities like movie nights, organizing the chapel sports day, and visiting schools every semester, which is in addition to their weekly fellowship.

It’s a fellowship of all men in the church, a place where men meet and discuss various matters concerning the church, family and social life. The Men’s fellowship meets once per month at our home places. This is meant to groom the young boys into being responsible men as you know, “iron sharpens iron.”

t’s a fellowship of all women in the church, a place where women meet to talk about different matters concerning the church, family and social life. They too meet once a month.

This is the Praise and Worship team, choir minister in every church service every Sunday and in other church programs such as Night of Worship(N.O.W). The choir meets on Fridays for prayer, and Saturdays for rehearsals.

The Decoration Unit is responsible in decorating the church for the service and to safeguard materials owned by the church

This is the department, which is responsible for taking care for the needy, both inside and outside the church, making sure church members have basic needs for living a better life. It is also responsible for outreach programmes, where the church reaches out to the needy in the society.

Children are blessings from the Lord. The Church has this department special for taking care of children and teaching them the ways of the Lord at a nearly/young age. Children meet for Sunday school classes every Sunday during the service.

This department organises all the bible study meetings and sessions of the church. They meet on Wednesdays at 1730hrs in the chapel office and on Sundays at 1000hrs to discuss the Word of God either book-wise or topic-wise.

The team in this department welcomes attendants and provide directions and instructions during the service. Apart from also taking note of the visitors and newcomers including their details, the ushers do the security works during the service.

This department records all the Church’s services and publishes them on Social Media platforms. The church has Facebook, Instagram and YouTube social media accounts, courtesy of this Department.

Chapel Leaders

Major Church Events

KIUT Chapel has major events that take place every year. The aim of these events is to bring people into celebration, fellowship, learning and worship. The major events include Valentine Special, Seminars, Night of Worship, Farewell Party, Church Anniversary and Christmas Carol.

Valentine Special

It takes place on or around the 14th of February whereby the church especially the youth gather to learn and discuss different matters pertaining to relationships. In 2019, we had Brother Yessaya Mwakalinga from Arusha who came to talk on Godly Relationships and Sexual Purity. This program is important for the church to teach the right way of starting and living in relationships.

Seminars

The Church organises seminars on different topics from different people. We embrace the fact that the Word of God should dwell in us all by learning, understanding, and knowing the ways of God more and more. In 2019, for example, we had four (4) good days Mr Peter Pawa, learning on genuine prayer and worship.

Night of Worship (N.O.W)

N.O.W is an overnight program where by the church, the whole KIUT Community and invited ministers gather to Praise and Worship God. It’s always a wonderful experience. In 2019, for example, the N.O.W was held on 2nd August where we had the Jordan Band, John Lissu, Evian Kamala (Jesus Way Worship), St. Paul II Catholic Choir from KIUT Catholic as guest singers, and Apostle Mwalupogo as the Guest Speaker.

It had more than three hundred (300) people in attendance and over four hundred (400) online viewers.

Farewell & Welcome 1st Year Parties

Every academic year our church receives new students (freshers) and departs finalists after their graduation ceremonies. We use these events to welcome the new members by having fellowship with them, talking to them about campus life and its environment in general.

Also, during the farewell party, we thank God for the time he has given us, cherishing the moments together and pray to bid farewell to the brethren who leave the campus to continue with the journey of life in the Kingdom of God.

Church Anniversary

Every year we celebrate and remember the birth of this wonderful church and family that the Lord gave us. We remember and pray for those who planted this church, made foundations, and watered it until today. We remind ourselves the vision that God has given us and pray for the courage and strength of keeping this work going. It’s a time where we evaluate ourselves as a church and  the impact that we  have made over the years.
