Historical Background

The Historical formulation of the Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) Speech and Debate Club is heavily linked with improving the Academic Excellency of students across all University Faculties. The Improvement of the students’ performance is not only realized in lecture rooms or classes but also through having intellectual oral debates, which has helped many people, including Worlds Leaders in terms of building capacity of their confidence, hence also helping students to score highly in Class Presentations and Public Speaking.

The World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), the world’s largest debating tournament, established in 1980 from 80 up to 250 members, the Pan African Universities Debating Championship, the biggest intercollege debate tournament, established in 2008 from 80 to 150 members, and the East African Community (EAC) University Students Debate formed in 2012 are among the great pillars to the foundation of the Speech and Debate Club with the main aim of providing a package of Wisdom, Knowledge, and understanding that will develop quality leaders at all levels of Academic Professionalism.

The Debate Competitions takes place in all different blocks of Regions which continue to inspire and attract the desire to extract students’ capabilities at Kampala International University in Tanzania that will at the end help in building responsible citizens of various countries that will uphold the candlelight of Political, Social and Economic Development into the sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Group arguments in intellectual debates among students help in sharing and learning of different skills from within the students because without skills we cannot solve our problem, believing that a learning society needs one other to solve problems. It has been through experience and continuous learning about debates where we think it fits to introduce this Academic Joint of Excellency.

It would be a conspiracy theory to think that debates are inconsequential, more especially to this generation of the 21st Century, which has framed itself as being Intellectually Vibrant on issues of development around the globe. It must be the zeal of the students to prudently build this Academic spice which has a great contribution towards their future moments as leaders across all boards.

Lastly the Initiations of this Academic Oral Challenge thought that despite all hurdles which may enslave the program it is important to leave a legacy of wisdom as one of the finest business for leadership is one of the things you cannot delegate, you either exercise it or you abdicate it.
