PhD Opportunity in Malaria Modelling

We are offering a full-time PhD position (2025–2029) under the Wellcome Trust–funded project “Strengthening health and disease modelling for public health decision making.” The Consortium spans universities in Tanzania, Kenya, Norway, and the UK. The successful candidate will be admitted to the Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) at the University of Nairobi (Kenya) or the University of Bergen (Norway), with most fieldwork conducted in Africa.

About the Project & Work Tasks

  • Participate in infectious disease modelling courses in Nairobi (University of Nairobi), Imperial College London, and other Consortium‐specified locations.
  • Develop or adapt mathematical models for malaria to estimate health impact of various interventions (vaccines, chemoprevention strategies).
  • Provide training and orientation to Malaria Control Programme researchers on using models to optimize intervention implementation.
  • Use models to predict the impact of implementing intervention combinations at sub-national levels in selected High-Burden High-Impact countries.
  • Disseminate modelling findings at conferences, seminars, and other academic forums.
  • Participate in Consortium meetings and project‐related activities.
  • Support project implementation tasks, including setting up a modelling laboratory on the KIUT campus and mentoring new modellers.

Qualifications & Personal Qualities

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Data Science, Mathematical Modelling, Decision Modelling, Biology, Public Health, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in relevant research projects is an advantage.
  • Proven ability to work independently in a structured manner, and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated motivation and potential to undertake a PhD project.
  • Fluency in both oral and written English is required.
  • Experience programming in R, Python, or similar languages is a significant plus.
