Overview

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) is committed to addressing the critical need for skilled pharmaceutical professionals to support sustainable healthcare delivery and national development. With Tanzania facing challenges such as inadequate access to health facilities, high maternal and child mortality rates (578 per 100,000 live births and 68 per 1,000 live births, respectively, DHS 2005), and a high burden of diseases including malaria, HIV/AIDS, TB, and non-communicable diseases, the department plays a vital role in training competent technicians. By aligning with the National Technical Awards (NTA) system mandated by the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE), our programmes aim to equip students with the skills and knowledge to enhance pharmaceutical service delivery in health facilities across the country.

The department responds to the inequitable deployment of trained health personnel, with only 35% of primary health facilities staffed by skilled workers, many lacking appropriate pharmaceutical training. By adopting an outcomes-based curriculum, we aim to produce semi-qualified pharmaceutical personnel capable of addressing these gaps, reducing medicine loss, and improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations, particularly children and women of reproductive age.

Aim of the Programme

The aim of the Pharmaceutical Sciences training programme is to supply Tanzania with adequately trained pharmacy technicians who can work effectively in various health facilities and contribute to the provision of basic pharmaceutical services. The programme focuses on equipping students with essential competencies, enabling them to take responsibility for their professional roles and meet the demands of the health sector.

Academic Programmes

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers programmes designed to prepare students for dynamic roles in the pharmaceutical industry, aligned with the National Technical Awards (NTA) system to ensure quality and transferability of qualifications.

Research Focus

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is dedicated to advancing research in pharmaceutical sciences, focusing on drug development, pharmacotherapy, and pharmaceutical care. Our research aims to address pressing health challenges in Tanzania, including infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and medicine accessibility, contributing to improved healthcare outcomes.

Global Perspective

The department fosters a global perspective by aligning its programmes with international pharmaceutical standards. Students are encouraged to engage in global health initiatives, collaborate on research, and explore opportunities in the international pharmaceutical industry, preparing them to contribute to healthcare worldwide.

Career Development

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is committed to preparing students for successful careers in pharmacy through internships, mentorship, and partnerships with health facilities and pharmaceutical industries. Graduates are equipped to serve as pharmacy technicians, pharmaceutical assistants, and researchers, addressing the critical shortage of skilled pharmaceutical personnel in Tanzania.

Student Life

The department fosters a vibrant student community through pharmacy clubs, health outreach programmes, and professional development workshops. Students participate in community health initiatives and industry networking events, enhancing their practical experience and preparing them for leadership roles in pharmaceutical sciences.
