About the Directorate
Established in March 2015, the Directorate of Gender Affairs at Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) is dedicated to promoting gender equality and equity across all university activities. We strive to address gender disparities and create a balanced, inclusive environment through holistic and gender-responsive practices.
Our vision is to build a gender-responsive university where substantive equality is realized. Our mission is to integrate gender considerations into all university functions, eliminate discrimination, and foster an environment that empowers every member of the KIUT community.
Our Goals
- Promote a culture and values of gender equality and equity at KIUT.
- Supervise the implementation of the University’s Gender Policy.
- Compile, collate, and analyze cases of gender-based discrimination, exploitation, and violence.
- Provide support to victims of gender-based issues.
- Address perpetrators of gender-based discrimination and harassment.

Gender Equality Promotion
Fosters a culture of gender equality and equity across all university activities.
Policy Implementation
Oversees the execution of the university’s Gender Policy to ensure compliance.
Support Services
Provides advisory and counseling services for gender-based issues.
Awareness Campaigns
Conducts programs to raise awareness about gender issues and empowerment.
Grievance Handling
Manages and addresses gender-related complaints and harassment cases.
Collaboration
Partners with stakeholders to enhance gender-responsive initiatives.

Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future Plus (O3 Plus)
A national initiative by UNESCO to ensure learners in higher education achieve positive health, education, and gender equality outcomes by reducing HIV infections, unintended pregnancies, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). KIUT's Directorate of Gender Affairs coordinates all project activities on campus.
Impact: Strengthening health, safety, and gender equality for students across 26 higher education institutions in Tanzania.
Our Services
The Gender Affairs Directorate undertakes a variety of initiatives to promote gender equality and support the KIUT community, including:
- Providing advisory and counseling services for gender-based issues.
- Conducting orientation programs for first-year students on gender policies.
- Organizing training in life skills, gender awareness, and leadership.
- Supporting gender-focused student clubs and activities.
- Promoting female enrollment in STEM fields.
- Coordinating International Women’s Day celebrations.
- Partnering with stakeholders to enhance gender initiatives.
- Supporting female empowerment through workshops.
- Raising awareness about health and decision-making.
