Evolution of Sports at KIUT

The journey of sports at Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) began with the enthusiasm of students playing informal football and basketball matches, sparking a culture of athletic engagement that has grown into a cornerstone of university life.

In 2015, basketball took root on borrowed grounds at Magereza prison, laying the foundation for competitive sports. By 2017, the construction of a standard basketball court marked a significant milestone, enabling formal inter-faculty competitions and increased student participation.

The university's Marketing Department recognized sports as a powerful tool for branding in 2019, elevating KIUT's visibility through regional and national tournaments. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 unexpectedly catalyzed growth, as staff formed the KIUT Veterans Club, which evolved into the comprehensive KIUT Games and Sports Club, encompassing football, basketball, volleyball, and netball.

Volleyball emerged as a powerhouse in 2020, achieving international acclaim with players representing Tanzania in Germany by 2023. The introduction of Kabaddi in 2023, following KIUT's hosting of the National Kabaddi League in 2022, brought rapid success, with both men's and women's teams dominating the 2024 Indian Cultural Centre bonanza.

Netball, established in 2021, quickly rose to prominence, competing in the East Africa Tournament in Kenya by 2023. Football, a mainstay since KIUT's inception, progressed through division leagues, with the women's team launching in 2024 and claiming victory in the 3rd Division.

Under the leadership of Sport President Mr. Peter Kaahwa and Sport Chairman Mr. Neil P. Mboma, KIUT's sports programmes continue to foster teamwork, discipline, and pride, supported by a 50% scholarship for talented athletes, ensuring a legacy of athletic excellence and community unity.
