KIUT Workshop Inspires New Teaching Excellence

Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence by hosting a successful Case Study Presentation Workshop on Friday, October 24. Organized by the Department of Business and Management, the workshop aimed to strengthen the application of student-centered, practical teaching methods across the university. The session, held in the university's Boardroom, was led by the esteemed Professor David Sharp from Ivey Business School at Western University, Canada. Professor Sharp provided participants with a deep dive into the principles and global best practices of utilizing case studies as a powerful teaching tool in higher education. The seminar ran from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and fostered a dynamic environment where attendees engaged in lively discussions, posed challenging questions, and shared their instructional experiences. A core theme was how the case method effectively encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and the essential practical application of theoretical classroom knowledge. The emphasis was placed on interactive learning, highlighting the active contribution required from both instructors and students for optimal results. The event saw exceptional attendance, with over 60 participants from across the university's academic and administrative arms. Key attendees included the Vice Chancellor, his assistants, Faculty Deans, the Dean of Students, the Academic Registrar (AR) and assistants, Heads of Departments (HODs), and numerous lecturers. Their collective participation signaled a unified commitment to innovation in pedagogy and the promotion of a more student-centered learning experience. The workshop delivered several crucial insights for enhancing classroom effectiveness. Firstly, the case study approach is an invaluable method for directly connecting academic theory with practical application, effectively bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace. Secondly, active student participation is crucial for enhancing both understanding and long-term knowledge retention. Furthermore, instructors are encouraged to transition from being knowledge dispensers to acting as facilitators who guide discussions and enable students to arrive at informed conclusions. Finally, constructive feedback and open, respectful discussions are key to creating a truly engaging learning environment. The university's strategy for sustaining the workshop's impact focuses on four main areas: Curriculum Integration through systematically adding case studies to courses; Capacity Building via follow-up internal training for lecturers; Content Localization by developing case materials based on Tanzanian and regional contexts; and Quality Assurance through a monitoring system using student feedback to ensure the university meets global academic standards.
