KIUT Prioritizes Athlete Health

Author: Mrs. Immanuella Duke Chief Editor: Mr. Goodluck Mwashilingi From July 23rd to 24th, Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) held a comprehensive Sports Health Training to improve the well-being of its student athletes. The event, hosted in the Science Education classrooms, placed a strong focus on Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation & Nutrition Awareness. The training was a collaborative effort between KIUT’s Office of Sports and Culture and the Health Sciences Department. Led by Kampala-based student trainers Jerryson Lema, Fredrick Msaki, and Joseph, the sessions aimed to equip athletes with knowledge on injury prevention, basic rehabilitation, and the importance of proper nutrition and hydration. Over 60 student athletes from basketball, volleyball, netball, football, and kabaddi teams participated in the program, which also included practical health screenings. Day One focused on injury prevention strategies. The trainers elaborated on common sports injuries and demonstrated safe rehabilitation routines and stretching techniques. Moreover, participants underwent health assessments, including Body Mass Index (BMI) calculations and blood pressure checks, giving them a better understanding of their personal fitness baselines. The day concluded with open discussions on integrating these practices into daily training. Day Two built on the success of Day One. The trainers encouraged participants to explore sports nutrition essentials, introducing them to interactive meal planning and hydration workshops. They then facilitated an engaging Q&A session where athletes asked questions directly related to their sports and health needs. The training wound up with a closing discussion and feedback collection, ensuring participants could share their insights and future needs. For many attendees, the experience was both eye-opening and transformative. One memorable highlight was a live taping demonstration on sports injury management. Flavia, a member of the Women’s Volleyball Team, reflected: “I didn’t know how much my blood pressure could affect my performance. This training opened my eyes to things I never considered as an athlete.” Although there were no formal recognitions or awards, the impact was clear. Many participants reported a renewed awareness of their personal health and committed to adopting safer warm-up techniques and better nutrition habits. Following this success, the Office of Sports and Culture plans to hold these health workshops quarterly, reinforcing KIUT’s ongoing commitment to developing well-rounded, high-performing athletes.
