Mainland Netball League to kick off in Tabora on September 26

The Tanzania Mainland First Division Netball League will roar into action from September 26 to October 6, 2025, in Tabora Region, bringing together emerging teams and offering a crucial platform for national team selection. Confirming the development, the Chairperson of the Tanzania Netball Association (CHANETA), Dr. Devotha Marwa, said 20 clubs that earned promotion from the second division last year are set to battle for glory this season. According to her, the league will not only crown champions but will also be used to identify players for the national team that will compete in the African Championships scheduled for Malawi later this year. Additionally, the top three clubs will qualify to represent Tanzania at the East and Central Africa Club Championships. “This league is a golden opportunity for players to prove their ability,” Dr. Marwa told The Respondent Online. “We want to see performance on the court—skills, discipline, and consistency. We cannot pick a player who stays at home, no matter how talented. Selection will be based entirely on what we see during the competition.” She stressed that preparations are well underway to ensure the league is conducted professionally and produces players with the right calibre for the national team. Zanzibar has already completed its selection, she revealed, and the mainland players will soon join them in a combined training camp. “This year, our focus is not just to participate in international tournaments but to compete effectively. The national team has already gained experience from past competitions, and now we are ready to aim higher,” Dr. Marwa said. She also urged participating clubs to take the tournament seriously and prepare their players to compete at the highest level. “The objective is not merely to take part but to raise the standards of the game. We want to see fierce competition and outstanding displays of skill,” she emphasized. The Tabora league is expected to draw attention nationwide, not only for its competitive spirit but also for its role in shaping the future of Tanzanian netball.
