The KIUT-Halotel 5G Revolution

Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) partnered with Viettel Tanzania PLC (Halotel Tanzania) through its Ilala Branch to usher in a new era of instantaneous connectivity. The collaboration climaxed with a Halotel 5G Bonanza on January 30th, 2026, marking a pivotal step in the university’s mission to merge advanced technology into student life and academic research. Held at the KIUT Sports Ground, the day was structured to blend technological education with social interaction. The event served as the official campus launch for Halotel’s new 5G internet services, a nationwide impact aimed at providing swift speeds and lower latency. For the KIUT community, this means more than just faster downloads; it represents a fundamental shift in digital engagement by providing speeds significantly faster than existing 4G networks, 5G enables seamless access to bandwidth heavy resources such as virtual labs, real time data analysis, and high-definition collaborative video conferencing.
The initiative was spearheaded by the Directorate of Students Affairs (Guidance, Counseling, and Gender Affairs Unit), highlighting the university's strategy to treat digital access as a core component of student welfare. Halotel's 5G rollout is designed to support the university transition toward a Smart Campus where everything from administrative registration to complex academic research is powered by reliable, rapid data. On-site SIM registration booths allowed students to upgrade to 5G instantly, with Halotel representatives providing technical guidance on the benefits of lower latency for educational apps. To celebrate the launch, new users were incentivized with gifts, including branded t-shirts and teacups. The bonanza was defined by a series of activities that emphasized gender inclusivity and healthy competition. A key highlight was the competitive female football match, which was organized exclusively for female students to promote physical health and active participation in campus life. This spirit of coordination extended to the "Vuta N’kuvute" (Tug-of-War) competition, where student teams demonstrated remarkable coordination and strength.
Traditional fun was not forgotten, as participants engaged in sack races and the entertaining chicken race, both designed to boost student interaction and campus morale. The day reached a peak during the male football finals, a high stakes match between students from the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Health Sciences in a display of great teamwork and strategy, the Humanities team emerged as the champions of the tournament. These activities, coordinated by the Peer Educator Association (APEKI), successfully utilized sports as a bridge to introduce students to the transformative potential of 5G technology.
The partnership between KIUT and Halotel is a reflection of Tanzania’s rapid digital transformation. Halotel's 5G expansion is a cornerstone of the national vision for a digitally driven economy, providing the foundation for e-commerce, digital education, and telemedicine. By bringing this technology directly to the university, KIUT ensures that its students are proficient in the tools that will drive the global economy.
