KIUT Debuts Building Youth Talk Initiative to Support Future Leaders

Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT), in cooperation with the Directorate of Students Affairs (Guidance, Counselling, and Gender Affairs Unit) and the Peer Educators on Gender Based Violence, recently attained a significant milestone in youth empowerment. In a dynamic collaboration with the Capacity Building for Youth Organization (CBYO), the university hosted the Building Youth Talk Launching Event on January 24, 2026, at the E1 KIUT hall. The event convened 56 students (24 females and 32 males) for a day of intensive mentorship, financial literacy, and health advocacy, integrating academic life and professional excellence. Key Stakeholders in Attendance: TANTRAD-Tanzania Trade Development Authority (Trade and Market Opportunities), Tanzania Commercial Bank (TCB) (Financial Literacy), TAMSA KIUT (Health Advocacy) Bongo FM (Innovation and Media), Apeki (Gender and Student Welfare)

The events officially commenced with an opening remarks from the KIUTSO President, Mr. John Robin, who welcomed participants and emphasized the vital role of youth centered platforms in shaping responsible, innovative, and economically empowered leaders. Following this, the Managing Director of CBYO, Mr. Albogast Mbeya, introduced the organization’s mission and vision. He highlighted CBYO’s strategic focus on youth capacity building through education and advocacy, noting their operational presence in Dodoma, Morogoro, and Dar es Salaam.

The Building Youth Talk initiative was molded with a clear vision to equip KIUT students with the psychology of success. The main objective centered on nurturing skills in finance, entrepreneurship, investment, innovation, and sustainable development. The program kicked off with a deep dive into the world of trade, where representatives from the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TANTRADE) enlightened students on how to access local and international markets within the EAC, SADC, and AfCFTA regions. Students were introduced to the "Made in Tanzania" emblem, encouraging them to think globally while producing locally.

Shifting focus to economic stability, Ms. Shani Shuma from TCB delivered a powerful session on the Psychology of Finance. The discussion moved beyond just saving money, focusing on shareholding and the long-term benefits of stock investment, ensuring students view themselves as future investors rather than just consumers. Innovation and mindset was further explored as Mr. Justine Nikiza from Creative Bongo FM challenged the youth to embrace innovation. His message was simple but profound: Do not fear mistakes. He emphasized that problem solving and effective communication are the primary tools for sustainable development in the modern age.

Health and gender awareness remained a pillar of the day’s productivity. TAMSA KIUT led the NILINDE Campaign, educating attendees on cervical cancer prevention and management. Furthermore, the Gender Coordinator, Madam Mary Kalunga, and the APEKI team facilitated a session on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) via the UNESCO-led O3PLUS initiative, covering topics from HIV/STI preventions to gender-based violence. To ensure these lessons translated into action, students were trained to apply the SMART framework to their personal and professional goals. By ensuring their objectives are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, the participants left with a practical roadmap for their future careers.

By bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world application, KIUT continues to ensure that its graduates are not only academically sound but also economically empowered and market ready.
