Breaking the Silence: TAMSA KIUT Takes on Female Genital Schistosomiasis

The fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) attained consequential push as the Tanzania Medical Students’ Association (TAMSA) KIUT Chapter joined the TAMSA Kairuki Chapter for an impactful seminar addressing Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS). Gathered at Pergola Hall on the morning of January 24th, 2026, future medical professionals came together to discuss a condition that remains a silent epidemic among young women and girls. Despite its severe reproductive health consequences, FGS is oftentimes underdiagnosed. This forum sought to bridge that gap by linking the disease to broader Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), emphasizing youth capacity building and public health advocacy.

The workshop provided a platform for comprehensive clinical and social discussions. By focusing on the outrageous impact of FGS on the female population, the committee identified four pillars for progress: Early Detection: Prioritizing timely diagnosis to avoid long term health risks. Stigma Reduction: Using community awareness to transform health seeking behaviors. Integrated Services: Pushing for FGS screening to be woven into existing SRHR frameworks. Youth Leadership: Mobilizing medical students as the primary drivers of NTD education and prevention.

The scope of the day extended beyond NTDs to encompass menstrual health. MEGA WE CARE presented their Clear Cap Technology, featuring GOFEN as an innovative solution for rapid menstrual pain relief. This session highlighted how managing pain is essential for women’s productivity and wellbeing, serving as a vital component of the

modern SRHR agenda. The TAMSA KIUT representatives were central to the event’s success, contributing to energetic Q&A sessions and strategic networking. The insights gained during the seminar are set to become a cornerstone of the association’s upcoming community outreach and public health programs.

By moving beyond the classroom and into specialized advocacy, TAMSA KIUT is ensuring that neglected diseases like FGS receive the clinical and social attention they deserve. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the association’s commitment to empowering the next generation of healthcare leaders in Tanzania.
