KIUT Joins Inaugural MAMODEX Malaria Modelling Meeting in Nairobi

Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) participated in the launch of the MAMODEX Project, a five-year initiative to strengthen health and disease modelling for better public health decisions across Africa. The inaugural meeting took place on the 21st and 22nd November 2025 in Nairobi, hosted by the Mount Kenya University Centre for Malaria Elimination (MKU-CEMA) at Park Inn by Radisson, Westlands. Partners from KIUT, the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), University of Nairobi, Mount Kenya University, University of Bergen, and Imperial College London attended. The two days symposium aligned the partnership on governance, work packages, economic evaluations, stakeholder engagement, and implementation strategies while setting clear 1-year milestones and robust monitoring frameworks. Malaria still claims over 90% of global deaths on the continent, with 80% of victims being children below the age of five. As nearly 40 African countries prepare to roll out malaria vaccines, data-driven modelling and chemoprevention are becoming essential tools to drastically cut the burden. Speakers underscored the urgency of the task: Dr. Katherine Davis (Wellcome Trust) stressed the need for tight collaboration with national malaria control programs to turn evidence into action. Prof. Sheetal Silal (Technical Advisory Board) called for stronger data systems and decision-support tools. Prof. Thumbi Mwangi (Co-Director, CEMA) highlighted the importance of building modelling capacity inside African institutions to create solutions that fit local transmission patterns and health systems. KIUT’s active role in MAMODEX portrays its obligation to advancing continental health research. Through the project, KIUT will: Build expertise in malaria modelling and data-driven decision making, Contribute regional insights to shape public health strategies and Drive interdisciplinary research that benefits Tanzania and East Africa As MAMODEX gains momentum, KIUT is ready to deliver innovative models, strengthen partnerships, and help craft evidence-based policies that protect Africa’s children and accelerate the path to malaria elimination.
