Checkmate in Morogoro: The Rafiki Tournament

At Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT), a new intellectual force is brewing, and its face is currently focused intensely on 64 squares of black and white. Nanai Joseph Mgeri, a 4th year Bachelor of Pharmacy student and the leading figure of the newly formed KIUT Chess Club, recently returned from the Rafiki tournament, a prestigious international open tournament which has put KIUT on the Tanzanian chess map.

The Rafiki tournament was a unique collaborative effort organized by the Embassy of Poland in partnership with the Jordan University College (JUCo) in Morogoro, the event was designed to foster international friendship through the Game of Kings. The tournament was a truly global affair, drawing 34 elite participants from seven different federations: Tanzania, Poland, India, Germany, Nigeria, Uganda and Angola.

As a FIDE-ranked player, Mr. Nanai entered the five-round tournament facing some of the most seasoned competitors in the region. The Pharmacy student proved that his tactical precision isn't limited to the lab; it extends to the chessboard. Nanai emerged with an impressive 3 points. His standout moment was a stunning victory over the 2nd highest ranked player in Tanzania. By defeating one of the nation’s top grand strategists, Nanai signaled that KIUT is no longer just a participant in the chess scene, but a serious contender.

For the KIUT Chess Club, Nanai’s performance is more than just a personal win; it is a foundation. Balancing the rigorous demands of a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree with international level chess, Nanai embodies the intellectual and strategic mindset that the club hopes to attract. The tournament was a test of endurance and strategy," Nanai shared. "Playing against seven different nationalities showed me that chess is a universal language, beating one of the top ranked players in the country was proof that with the right preparation, our club can take on anyone."

The KIUT Chess Club is currently welcoming new members of all skill levels. Whether you are a Grandmaster in the making or have never picked up a pawn, the club offers a space to develop critical thinking, patience, and strategic foresight. As Nanai Joseph Mgeri continues to represent us on the national stage, there has never been a better time to join the KIUT Chess Club. Your move, KIUT.
