In a powerful display of faith and social responsibility, the Tanzania Movement for Catholic Students (TMCS) at Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) stepped off campus on the 14th of March 2026 to support those on the margins of society. Organized in the heart of the Lenten season, the outreach saw students putting their motto, “Preferential Option for the Poor and Mother Earth,” into practice through a day of dedicated service and community solidarity.

Under the leadership of the TMCS KIUT Chairperson, Joseph Kalinga, the team visited Segerea Prison, Ukonga Prison, and Mzambarauni Primary School (Kitengo cha Watoto Viziwi). During these visits, TMCS members donated essential items to women inmates at Segerea, male inmates at Ukonga, and deaf pupils at Mzambarauni, ensuring that each group felt the warmth of community support. The initiative aimed to go beyond mere donation, seeking to promote a spirit of compassion and service to the vulnerable.

By focusing on groups often overlooked by the mainstream, the students reflected the true meaning of the Lenten journey transforming personal reflection into outward acts of love. Through this, the outreach provided dignity and essential supplies to women inmates at Segerea Prison, extended community care and support to the men at Ukonga Prison, and fostered educational inclusivity and aid for the deaf pupils at Mzambarauni Primary School.

TMCS KIUT continues to uphold its commitment to "faith in action" by supporting those in need and strengthening the spirit of community care. These student leaders are proving that the university experience is as much about character and service as it is about academics.
