International Women’s Day 2026: KIUT Stands for Equality

The spirit of progress and the rhythmic beat of a live band filled the air at the Kampala International University in Tanzania (KIUT) on March 6, 2026. What began as a vibrant morning march from the university main entrance, led by DVC-FA Prof. Martin, transformed into a powerful day of advocacy, reflection, and professional solidarity at the ICT grounds. Under the dual themes of “Give to Gain” and “Rights and Justice for All Women and Girls,” the KIUT community led by the Office of Counseling and Gender Affairs and the Social Work Association came together to prove that empowering women is not a favor, but a fundamental right.
The event, elegantly coordinated by Ms. Saida Kingi (ADVC-FA) and the IWD Committee, highlighted the "O3 Plus" project, a partnership with UNESCO aimed at ensuring health and education for all. Prof. Martin opened the ceremony with a poignant reminder: unity is our greatest intervention. He urged the participants to foster a team spirit where no colleague, student, or staff member faces their professional or personal journey alone. The ICT grounds became a hub for intellectual exchange. A high-level panel featuring Dr. Zahra, Dr. Mary Mosha, and KIUTSO leaders explored the "Challenges, Choices, and Charge" of women in leadership.
Simultaneously, the student body engaged in a rigorous debate on whether women still require "special support" in the modern era. While the opposition championed meritocracy, the proposition successfully highlighted that as long as systemic inequalities and gender-based violence exist, targeted support remains a necessity for social justice.

The atmosphere turned deeply reflective as Ms. Fides Urio from the Epilepsy Foundation shared her journey. Her story of overcoming social isolation to build an internationally recognized organization served as a live case study for our Social Work members: Challenges are not dead ends; they are opportunities for growth.
As we reflect on the success of 2026, the KIUT Social Work Association and the Gender Desk reaffirm their dedication to this journey. By aligning our academic mission with the goals of our nation, we ensure that the spirit of equality seen today becomes a permanent reality for every household in Tanzania. International Women’s Day at KIUT was not just a ceremony; it was a renewal of our oath to protect, promote, and empower every woman on our campus.
